How to Book the Right Hair Color Service at DeCola Salon in Exton, PA

A guide for clients navigating our new color menu — so you always walk in knowing exactly what to expect.

If you've ever stared at a salon booking menu and wondered whether you need a balayage, a gloss, highlights, or something else entirely — you're not alone. Hair color has a language of its own, and even the most hair-savvy clients can find themselves unsure which service is the right fit.

At DeCola Salon in Exton, Pennsylvania, we recently redesigned our entire color menu from the ground up. The goal was to make every service clearer, more consistent, and easier to book — so that when you sit down in our chair, there are no surprises. This post walks you through our color categories, explains what each one is designed to do, and helps you choose the right service before you book.

Hair color results at DeCola Salon in Exton PA — balayage, dimensional color, and lived-in color by our expert stylists serving Chester County and the Main Line

Start Here: The Three Hair Color Categories

Our color services are organized into three main categories: Maintenance Color, Blonding, and Dimensional Color. Understanding the differences among these three is key to booking the right appointment.

Maintenance Color — For Refreshing and Depositing

Maintenance Color covers any service where deposit color is the primary process. No lightening — just rich, seamless color applied to refresh or change your shade.

There are three services in this category:

  • Root Retouch — designed for clients with up to 2 inches of regrowth who want to blend their roots with their existing color. If your regrowth is longer than 2 inches, an All Over Color is likely the better fit.

  • All Over Color — a single formula applied from root to end for a seamless, uniform result. This is ideal for clients with significant regrowth, those refreshing their existing color, or those transitioning to a deeper or richer shade. This service does not lift or lighten.

  • Gloss/Toner Refresh — a standalone toner or gloss appointment that refreshes your tone, adds luminosity, and keeps your color looking vibrant and shiny longer between color appointments. If your color is starting to look dull or faded but you're not ready for a full service, a Gloss/Toner Refresh is the perfect in-between appointment to bring it back to life.

Maintenance Color is for clients who love their current color direction and just need to keep it looking its best — or for those ready to go richer and deeper without any lightening.

Blonding — For Brightness Through Lightening

Blonding covers all services where lightening is the primary goal. If you want your hair brighter, lighter, or more luminous — this is your category. At DeCola Salon, Blonding replaces what you may know as foil highlights. The distinction between Blonding and Dimensional Color is important: Blonding is lightening only. The goal is brightness.

There are four Blonding services at DeCola Salon:

  • Face Framing Blonding — lightening focused around the face only. Everything outside the face frame is untouched. Perfect for clients who want to open up their features with targeted brightness without a full commitment.

  • Partial Blonding — lightening through the crown and top sections only. Creates a sun-kissed brightening effect through the upper half of your hair, with your natural color showing through underneath.

  • Full Blonding — full-head lightening for maximum brightness from root to end. This is your classic full-highlights or full-foil service. If you want your entire head lighter, this is it.

  • Platinum Blonding — our highest-lift blonde service. Combines full-head lightening with a deposit color application in a single appointment — designed specifically for clients aiming for a true, clean platinum result.

Two things that apply to both Blonding and Dimensional Color:

  • Toner is always separate. Toner is never included in the base price of any Blonding or Dimensional Color service. It is almost always recommended after a lightening or dimensional service, and your stylist will discuss your toner options at consultation.

  • Base color changes are handled separately. Neither Blonding nor Dimensional Color includes a base color change. If you also want your overall base color refreshed — whether that's roots only or root-to-end — your stylist will add a Maintenance Color service alongside your service at the consultation.

Dimensional Color — The Category Formerly Known as Balayage

This is where things get nuanced — and where most booking confusion happens. Dimensional Color is our most versatile color category, and it replaces what we previously called balayage on our menu.

At DeCola Salon in Exton, PA, Dimensional Color covers any service where the primary technique is freehand or hand-painted color application — lightening, deposit color, or both — to create depth, contrast, and movement. If you're looking for that lived-in, natural, multi-tonal result that looks like your hair has always been that way, you're in Dimensional Color territory.

Here's how it differs from Blonding: Blonding uses traditional sectioned placement to maximize brightness. Dimensional Color uses freehand, hand-painted technique to create dimension, depth, and a soft, natural finish. Think balayage, foilayage, teasy lights, reverse balayage, and lowlights — all of these fall under Dimensional Color.

We offer four levels of Dimensional Color:

  • Face Frame Dimension — freehand or hand-painted color focused around the face only. One color process. Everything outside the face frame is untouched. Great for clients who want subtle dimension and brightness in the areas that frame their features.

  • Partial Dimension — freehand or hand-painted color through the crown and top sections. One color process. Creates movement and dimension through the upper half of your hair, with your natural color showing underneath.

  • Full Dimension — freehand or hand-painted color throughout the entire head. One color process. This is our most popular dimensional service — your stylist selects the specific technique based on your hair and your desired result.

  • Premium Full Dimension — full-head dimensional color using more than one distinct technique in a single appointment. For example: balayage and lowlights together, or highlights and reverse balayage combined. This service is designed for clients whose look requires a layered, multi-process approach to achieve the richest result.

One thing worth knowing about Dimensional Color at DeCola: when you book a Dimensional Color service, you are selecting the placement coverage and complexity level — not the specific technique. Your stylist will determine whether balayage, foilayage, teasy lights, or another approach is best for your hair and desired result. Trust the process.

What About Balayage? Foilayage? Lived-In Color?

We get it — you've been using the word balayage for years, and now it's not on our menu. Here's the thing: balayage is a technique, not a service. So is foilayage, teasy lights, and reverse balayage. At DeCola Salon, we've organized our menu around what you're trying to achieve — the result — rather than the specific technique your stylist uses to get there.

So if you're searching for balayage in Exton, PA, or foilayage near the Main Line, or lived-in color in Chester County — you're looking for Dimensional Color at DeCola. The specific technique your stylist uses is part of the professional service they provide. You describe the result you want; they determine how to get there.

When You Need a Consultation First: Transformational Color Services

Some color goals are too complex — or too individualized — to quote without a full in-person assessment. At DeCola Salon, three services fall into this category, and all require a consultation before booking:

  • Major Color Transformation — for clients planning a significant overall color change, including grey blending, going from dark to light, or any multi-process service that requires more than one distinct processing cycle.

  • Corrective Color — for clients whose hair needs professional correction before achieving the desired result. This includes uneven color, banding, box color removal, or over-processed hair.

  • Vivid / Fashion Color — for clients interested in bold, non-natural shades including vivid colors, pastels, and fashion tones.

All three services begin with a Specialty Color Consultation — a 30-minute appointment where your stylist assesses your hair, develops a full plan, and gives you a realistic price range before anything is scheduled. The $50 consultation fee is credited toward your service.

If you're not sure whether your goal falls into one of these categories, a general Color Consultation ($25, 15 minutes) is a great starting point. Your stylist can help you figure out exactly which service path is right for you.

A Quick Guide to Choosing Your Service

Still not sure? Use this as your starting point:
